Does automation mean AI?

Not necessarily. While some automations may use AI tools to assist with certain tasks, the most effective and reliable solutions I have found typically rely on straightforward logic: “if this happens, do that.” AI can be helpful, but it’s just one tool among many, each with its own strengths and limitations.

Why Make? What about Zapier or n8n?

I’ve used all three platforms, and each has its pros and cons. Zapier is easy to get started with but can be limiting and expensive as you scale. n8n is powerful and flexible, especially with its free self-hosted option, but it comes with a steeper learning curve. Make strikes the best balance for me—simple to use, powerful, and cost-effective—which is why I rely on it for my automations

What accounting tasks can be automated?

Many routine and repetitive accounting tasks are well suited to automation. This includes things like fetching supplier invoices from online portals, importing sales data from systems that don’t directly integrate with your accounting software, or completing right-to-work checks for new employees. For MYOB users, my Make connector opens the door to integrations with systems that were previously unavailable, allowing MYOB to connect into a much wider range of tools and workflows.

That said, the key limitation is the point of diminishing returns. Not every process is worth automating—if a task is rare, highly variable, or quick to do manually, the effort and cost to automate it may outweigh the benefits. The goal is to automate the work that delivers the most time savings, consistency, and reliability.
